Still here, Mom.

In a way it’s OK that I haven’t blogged for a spell. Again. It means I’ve been keeping busy, distracted from the ever-present lure of the Interwebs. Well, that’s half true. Even you find yourself reading this right now when you could be reading something more closely resembling educational. No? All right, I’ll tell you what’s new in Emilyland (and a few things that remain the same).
1. Folks in the Kong have started complaining about the weather. The humidity is creeping back up, bringing with it a few degrees’ increase in the thermometer. This week I noticed the refreshing (yet wasteful) blasts of aircon spewing from shops onto the sidewalks. Still to come: aircon condensation dripping on pedestrians from above. At least I tell myself that’s what it is. Shudder.
2. I forget my dry cleaning receipt about half the time. This is always fun. The lovely ladies ask me if I have the number from the receipt. Never do. So then I have to remember my mobile number and they thumb through the binder till they find the listing. Sign and off I go. You’d think they’d make a note of this and just keep my things in a certain place. I would. Or… nah, I probably won’t remember the receipt.
3. I’m learning Mandarin. Two mornings a week I meet a colleague and his lovely wife for class. Our usual teacher is very sweet and patient, and she enjoys my sense of humor. Toward the end of the 2-hour session, I start to get a little loopy. Understandable, after intense learning on only a few hours’ sleep. But it’s great fun. Call me a nerd, please.
4. I saw the beggar lady from two posts ago on Saturday while I was eating a mild chicken kebab outside Ebeneezer’s on Luard Road. She told the guy next to me about her predicament this time, ignoring me. I guess she really isn’t after food — only money. Hmm.
5. I’m getting closer to a regular group to play football with. Yes, soccer. More on that soon, I hope.
6. A party…at a winery!
7. I’m not on a ship, but my brother Andrew is. And I’m quite proud of him.
